The Montcalm Community College Centurions women’s volleyball team finished in second place at a tri held at Grace Christian University in Grand Rapids, Sept. 12.
The Centurions (3-8 overall) faced Kalamazoo Valley Community College and host Grace Christian at the tri event. KVCC got the best of MCC, winning three consecutive sets — 25-19, 25-20 and 25-17. However, the Centurions bounced back against Grace, sweeping them in three consecutive sets.
Against KVCC, Centurions middle blocker Alanna Kent (Belding, Mich.) led the team with eight kills and a 0.280 hitting percentage. Freshman outside hitter Emily Davis (Jenison, Mich.) finished with 10 kills. Freshman outside hitter Hailey Guerra (Grant, Mich.) totaled four kills on 11 attempts with no errors, hitting 0.364%.
Overall, MCC hit 0.214%.
Freshman setter Ella Bishop (Grand Rapids, Mich.) finished with 23 assists and sophomore libero Jaden Gomez (White Cloud, Mich.) had twoaces and eight digs.
Sophomore Briley Andres (Cedar Springs, Mich.) finished the match with a team-high 10 digs while freshman Jocee Pleune (Grant, Mich.) added 9 digs.
“The ladies played well,” said MCC head coach Kara Youngs.
Against Grace, the Centurions got their revenge, as Grace had won the best-of-five series at MCC’s home-opener of the season, Aug. 26, winning 3-2. At Grace, the young Centurions managed to keep their game together, turning the tables on the Tigers.
“The team is showing some change and growth from the first matchup with (Grace),” Youngs said.
Sophomore Jordan Dompreh (Flint, Mich.) collected 28 assists and four kills, hitting 0.364%. She also had six aces.
Davis led the team in kills with 13, hitting 0.129%, while Kent followed with 10 kills and converted 0.269% of her total attacks.
Freshman middle blocker Edy Davidson (Carson City, Mich.) had eight kills and made only one error, finishing with a team-high hitting percentage of 0.700.
On defense, Borek led the team in digs with 16, while Dompreh added 15 andAndres finished with 10 digs.
“I’m beyond proud of this group of ladies who keeps putting work in every day,” Youngs said. “They challenge each other in every practice to be better.”
